
Overview
This internship aims to give students pursuing a degree in the physical sciences, and science communication an opportunity to present to large groups of people at the Calusa Nature Center & Planetarium. Interns will host shows, answer questions, and operate the planetarium. Interns will also assist with the creation of new exhibits and programs, as well as the overall maintenance of the planetarium.

Qualifications

Currently enrolled in a college or university program in Astronomy, Physics, Science Communication, or related fields.

Passion for astronomy, and communicating science to the public.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Must be able to climb stairs, lift 40 lbs

Comfortable speaking in front of groups and doing public presentations, or at least willing to learn

Weekend (and evening) hours may be required

Must be comfortable working with people of all ages, including special needs groups

Computer literacy including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office

Must maintain a positive and outgoing demeanor
Responsibilities
(Including but not limited to)

Developing, scripting, and presenting a planetarium show for guests & field trips

The running of everyday planetarium operations(running shows,giving talks, helping guests, etc.)

Assist in the development of new exhibits & programs (field trip workshops, Space Explorers, summer camp, family events and activities, etc) for the planetarium.

Answer questions relating to the Nature Center

Answer questions relating to the exhibits and other astronomy topics.

Assist in taking out the telescopes and discussing what guests/customers are seeing.

Assist in the maintenance and cleaning of the planetarium facilities.

Assist in the facilitation of special events/fundraisers at the facilities as needed
